Dear Mrs Yakan
Thank you for your email and for the thoughtful and determined approach you are taking following the heartbreaking tragedy at this crossing on the 23rd January.
As the local councillors for Jaiden’s family and the location of the crossing, my ward colleague Cllr Ola Kolade and I are undertaking several enquiries of the responsible authorities, including requesting a list of all incidents at the crossing from 2000, risk assessments conducted for the crossing and whether any safety measures have been considered in the past.
We are also working closely with Croydon’s Executive Mayor and the Police Borough Commander to ensure a thorough investigation into the incident and a robust review into what safety measures can be introduced to make this crossing safer, including whether the crossing should be closed.
Alongside the Executive Mayor, we are also meeting with community leaders to hear from those impacted by this tragic loss. We remain committed to making this crossing safer—so that no other family has to endure such a devastating loss. These ongoing investigations will inform the next steps.
It is comforting to see the level of support for change in the community as evidenced by your petition, thank you for being so proactive. I will be sure to keep you updated as the investigation concludes.
With very best wishes
Gayle
