Close Badaling Bear Park and Relocate Its Bears to Accredited Sanctuaries

Close Badaling Bear Park and Relocate Its Bears to Accredited Sanctuaries
Il problema
To: The Government of China and the International Community
We, the undersigned, are deeply concerned about the distressing conditions at Badaling Bear Park, also known as Badaling Bear Paradise ("八达岭熊乐园"), located near the Great Wall at Badaling, China.
The bears at this facility are confined to small concrete enclosures that are devoid of adequate space, vegetation, and visible sources of water. These enclosures expose the bears to harsh weather conditions, such as rain and intense sun, without shelter. This environment causes profound distress and mental anguish, as evidenced by the abnormal behaviors like continuous head rocking, which I personally observed in the bears.
Moreover, the poorly maintained fencing around the enclosures allows tourists to throw various items into them, adding to the stress of the already suffering animals.
Despite being advertised as a major tourist attraction on various travel research platforms, both Chinese and international, the reality of animal suffering within Badaling Bear Park remains largely unacknowledged.
Given that these magnificent creatures cannot thrive in such confined and barren spaces, it is imperative that they be relocated to reputable sanctuaries where they can rehabilitate and live in environments that allow them to exhibit natural behaviors and roam freely.
We urgently call on the Chinese government to:
1. Permanently close Badaling Bear Park
2.Transfer the distressed bears to accredited facilities where they can receive proper care and live in conditions that meet their physical, social, and psychological needs.
3. Increase public awareness about the suffering of these animals and the importance of humane and ethical treatment of wildlife.
Confining wild animals in small, barren enclosures solely for human entertainment is cruel and inhumane. These artificial environments fail to meet the animals' needs, leading to significant behavioral abnormalities and reduced lifespans.
As China continues to grow in stature on the global stage, implementing a ban on wildlife in zoos and animal parks across the country would underscore its commitment to modern conservation practices and animal welfare standards. Such a move would also encourage the development of more sustainable and ethical approaches to wildlife conservation and education.
By signing this petition, we stand together in urging the Chinese government to take decisive action for the well-being of the bears at Badaling Bear Park and to set a precedent for wildlife conservation and animal welfare in the country.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
