Protect the Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary, Delta Park, Johannesburg

The Issue

The 40 year old Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary at Delta Park is an important refuge for the birds and other wildlife. It is currently under siege from a growing number of vagrants in the park who cut the fences, snare the birds and light fires.

Stolen goods are often found hidden in the sanctuary and surrounding residents are under increasing threat by these vagrants.

We the undersigned call on the City of Johannesburg to show its commitment to its environmental policy by developing a joint strategy to stop this wildlife sanctuary from further deterioration and develop an integrated master plan for the Delta Park area.

“Gandhi said that the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way it treats its animals. It could also be argues that the decay of a cities public spaces is an indication of that city's commitment to public service. Johannesburg is showing an alarming rate of decay - poorly maintained substations, potholes, unkept verges, and of course a dysfunctional municipality. Let's retake the city and start to revitalise this once-proud city. The public spaces are a refuge from chaotic city life and a reminder of the rich diversity of natural life that enrich this fantastic country. We call on the City of Johannesburg to protect our natural heritage.”
