The residents of South Woodham Ferrers  are hoping to bring to bring to the attention of the Council the concerns we have regarding the safety of the zebra crossing on Ferrers Road,  near the Asda exit. This crossing was installed many years ago and is not now suitable for the traffic flow, both vehicular and pedestrian. The crossing is poorly lit, and in our opinion needs upgrading to a pelican crossing at the very least.

Over the last few years alone, there have been dozens upon dozens of near misses - many of which could easily have been fatal. There have been at least two actual accidents involving people being struck while on the crossing plus countless vehicle to vehicle accidents due to sudden stopping. We are in the process of compiling witness stories and reports to show the sheer amount of incidents that happen on this crossing. The crossing is so poorly lit at night that it is extremely difficult to see pedestrians waiting to cross.

Careless driving is a high contributor. A great number of drivers are complacent, treat the crossing like it isn't there, they speed, and they don't pay attention. This could be reduced greatly by the crossing being  upgraded. It would be well lit, more distinguishable from the rest of the road, which should trigger a slow down and take care response. A road speed reduction, while would certainly help may not be practical. More lights, possibly a speed indicator sign and signals allowing pedestrians to cross would all but eliminate the several times a week incidents which will claim a life eventually.

The fact that the town is being expanded, plus the potential building of the power station in the near future, will exacerbate the situation. We feel now is the time to sort this out before something terrible happens. We want to be safe, we want our kids to feel safe crossing the road, we want drivers to be safer on the road. While there are many factors that might make the council put this on the back burner... This is one of the few issues we are as a town fairly united on.
