Powys CountyCouncil has decided to withdraw its decision to close Gwernyfed High School in the light of a Juducial Review Application submitted the High Court by a parent of a pupil at the school. The evidence amassed for the Judicial Review about the failure of Powys to comply with its legal obligations, was overwhelmingly against the local authority and it had little hope of winning. What a pity that the chief executive's legal department chose to advise the cabinet that there were no legal matters needing its consideration on March 24th thereby demonstrating, as they have in the past, the incompetence of everyone involved which unnecessarily caused a good deal of distress to staff, pupils, parents and communities Unfortunately, its not the end of the saga. Powys are starting again and we cannot be sure it will not try to foist the same plan on the school unless we keep up the pressure. Therefore we will keep this petition open until such time as Powys CC give up on their foolish ideas. Please keep the information circulating so we can drive the local authority to a complete back down. Over the next couple of weeks I will be writing directly to the Leader of the Council seeking a number of assurances that the old plan will not be brought back during the new process.I will publish the letter on this petition page and will invite you to email him as well so watch this space. The county council has therefore withdrawn its proposals but we still face a fierce battle to bring this sory saga to a close. JOHN FITZGERALD
