Stop Greyhound Racing in Birmingham

The Issue

The greyhound racing industry contributes to the killing and suffering of thousands of greyhounds every year.

It starts from the moment when thousands of greyhound pups are bred every year. Many of these pups will be deemed "unsuitable" for racing or "surplus requirements" Out of the 25,000+ greyhounds that are registered each year, around 10,000 of them will be killed before they even reach a track.

Out of the ones that are left, many are subject to squalid living conditions and mistreatment from their owners. Around 10% race with injuries such as muscle tears, broken bones and arthritis.

The average retirement age of a greyhound is 2-3 years old. A large number of ex-racers are abandoned, drowned, shot, poisoned or hanged. Some get shipped to Spain to be used as hunting dogs and are often hanged if not deemed good enough. Very few find good homes after racing.

Not everyone is an irresponsible greyhound owner, but the amount of deaths that are caused by the greyhound industry is more than enough to warrant a ban. Hall Green and Perry Barr stadiums are 2 of the 25 remaining greyhound tracks in the UK. As a Birmingham resident, I do not wish to see such cruelty take place in my city. Please join me in telling Hall Green and Perry Barr stadiums that we will no longer put up with greyhound being abused and killed through this inhumane sport.
