Return Steve Biko and Ahmed Timol's Autopsy Reports to their Families

So, yesterday, a gentleman by the name of Mr. Clive Steele and his sister, Ms. Susan Elizabeth Steele attempted to auction the Autopsy Reports of anti apartheid activists, Mr. Steve Biko and Mr. Ahmed Timol through an auction house called Westgate Walding Auctioneers. Fortunately, the Biko and Timol families filed for an urgent court interdict that was granted by the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg and prevented the auction of the Reports.

By way of background, the Biko and Timol families appointed Dr. Jonathan Gluckman to conduct a post mortem, independent from the state, to determine the causes of death.  The Autopsy Reports were later given to Mrs. Maureen Steele, mother to Clive and Susan Elizabeth Steele, who was Dr. Gluckman’s private secretary from June 1969 to February 1978.  Because his offices were under constant police scrutiny, Dr. Gluckman was very concerned about the safety of these documents, therefore entrusted the documents to Mrs Steele. Subsequent to her passing, the Reports came to be in the possession of her children, Clive and Susan Elizabeth Steele, who then arranged the sale.

While the Court Interdict will prevent the immediate sale of the Autopsy Reports, the documents remain in the possession of Westgate Walding Auctioneers and the Steele Family. Both the Biko Family and the Steve Biko Foundation are hopeful that Clive and Susan Steele will voluntarily return the Autopsy Reports to the respective families of the deceased, alongside any other material relating to other individuals that may be in their possession.

We cannot be certain that these documents will be returned to the Families and therefore need to urge the Steeles to return the Autopsy Reports as soon as possible to help preserve the dignity of the deceased; and the Biko and Timol families.
