COMBATING CLIMATE CHANGE

We have already observed irreversible effects on the environment due to climate change. The ice sheets have started to melt, raging fires have taken over the forest lands, and change in rainfall pattern is leading to a dramatic increase in floods in some places while other places are suffering from water scarcity.  There has been a reduction in productivity due to heat stress. Over 1 million species on earth are on the verge of extinction, threatening global food security, largely due to habitat loss and land degradation. Land degradation tandem with climate change and biodiversity loss will force over 700 million people to migrate by 2050.

Here are a few things we can do to combat climate change:

  • Entrust more power to the locals who know the best utilization of the local resources.
  • Cut down the use of plastic. This reduces carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions into our atmosphere.
  • Shift to a climate-friendly diet that features more plant-based proteins.
  • Change your lifestyle to suit current environmental conditions. Switch to LED bulbs and rechargeable batteries.
  • Make use of carpooling and public transport.
  • Better management and use of resources (sustainable). Switch to eco-friendly fuel (battery-powered cars). One can also get a home or workplace energy audit to see where you can make the most energy-saving gains.
  • Large-scale participation in conservation of resources and spreading awareness.
  • Use products that have the Energy Star label. This label helps consumers identify products that are10-50% more efficient.
  • Encourage scientific research in the field of climate change.
  • Urge the factories and industries to modify their existing equipment to make them eco-friendly, like air filters, precipitators, silencers and adopt wastewater management.

Only if we start today, will our tomorrow become better, not only for us but most importantly, for the future generations. Only when the last tree is cut, the last river poisoned, and the last fish dead, will we realize that money is of no use to us. Thus, we urge all of you to wake up and make a change before it's too late.

” Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.”
