In light of this year’s upheaval against racism, Cleveland’s Major League Baseball team has announced it will drop the Indians nickname.  We believe the organization should adopt a name that honors Cleveland, the American Splendors. 

Cleveland native Harvey Pekar, son of hard working Jewish grocers, jazz critic and VA file clerk, revolutionized the comic book format when he brought tales “off the streets of Cleveland” to life in his title “American Splendor.”  While Drew Carey offered an affectionate parody of Cleveland, Pekar opened a window onto everyday life, showing us Cleveland’s grit, hustle, and humor.  There would be nothing more Cleveland than to name the team the “American Splendors.”

Can’t you just hear the announcer at the game introducing them: “And now, from off the streets of Cleveland come...your hometown AMERICAN SPLENDORS!”
