It has been recently revealed that the Cleveland Clinic, who acquired Medina General Hosptial in 2009, will be closing the birthing unit at this hospital effective July 1, 2017. As reported by the Medina Gazette on March 16, 2017, "Hospital President Tom Tulisiak told The Gazette that the decision was attributable to a “steady decline” in the number of women choosing Medina Hospital. He said more than 65 percent of women in Medina County seek birthing services outside the county."
Mr. Tulisiak and the "numerous individuals" this decision was vetted through have neglected to show concern for the 35% of families that DO CHOOSE this birthing unit. This decision will leave thousands of families without a birthing center in the county. Further, as reported in the same Medina Gazette article, Mr. Tulsisiak said, “This is not a financial decision,” he said. “This is a decision to be able to provide our women in the county with the highest levels of care for birthing services.”
Closing the only birthing unit in the entire county is NOT providing the "highest level of care." Matter of fact, it is not providing care at all. It is removing ACCESS TO CARE. Mr. Tulisiak, please reconsider the decision to close the Medina Hospital birthing unit. PLEASE consider other options, like reducing its size and/or staff appropriate with the 27.5% decline in births over the last 5 years.
