Hi everyone,
If you are not already aware, CleftPALS Victoria and CleftPALS NSW are lobbying the Federal Government to improve access to speech therapy for cleft-affected people under NDIS and Medicare.
To better support our campaign, we need information from the cleft community re your experiences with accessibility and affordability of speech therapy in Australia.
Some people have asked what happened with the 'Give Our Kids A Voice' campaign, which was initiated by the then Vice President of CleftPALS Victoria, Evelyn Culnane. It was rejected by the then Labor government, without what both committees feel is a reasonable explanation for the rejection. The rationale that was provided was that speech therapy was deemed to be outside the scope of the Medicare Cleft Scheme. The Medicare Cleft Scheme was created to help cleft-affected families with the high cost of orthodontic treatment. In our opinion, speech therapy absolutely falls into the 'high cost' category at a cost of up to $350 for an initial consultation and $190 for a therapy session when accessed privately.
We fight once again for fair and equitable access to healthcare for this community. To do so, we need your input. HELP US, HELP YOU.
