Clean Drinking Water is a Human Right, Don't Deny Indigenous People that Right

The Issue

In 2010, the UN declared water and sanitation a human right. As of 2022 in Canada, 73% of Indigenous people’s waters are at high or medium risk of being unsafe to drink. Other communities in Canada do not face insecurity in their access to clean drinking water the way Indigenous communities do. This issue also extends to Indigenous communities outside of Canada. Indigenous people in the United States of America and Australia are also plagued with a lack of clean drinking water. For the last 25 years, Indigenous communities all around the western world have been denied their human right to clean water. These western countries have shown their ability to provide their non-indigenous citizens with clean, high-quality tap water. The governments of these countries over the years have enabled big capitalistic corporations to use indigenous water supplies as toxin dumping grounds. There is clear discrimination at play with this social injustice as Indigenous people on reserves are one of the only communities in these countries to not have clean drinking water. In the year 2023, it is absolutely unjust to simply sit back and witness this overt display of discrimination. There needs to be a change made now because we can not allow more and more indigenous people to suffer without access to clean water. Sign this petition now!
