Ben Correa-Goldberg started this petition to Clark University

In 1985, two years prior to his death, Arthur M. Sackler funded the construction of a new science facility at Clark University in his name. The name Sackler is now synonymous with the American opioid crisis, as the Sackler family’s privately owned Purdue Pharma used illegal marketing practices to cause immeasurable pain for millions of Americans. (The Center for Disease Control estimates that opioids have killed 702,000 Americans since 1999.) Arthur Sackler is one of the founders of Purdue Pharma and a designer of its aggressive and illegal marketing practices, which relied upon overprescription, deceptive advertising, and bribery. While Mr. Sackler died before his company created its drug OxyContin, he is directly responsible for the tactics his company used to create a national crisis. The time has come to remove the Sackler name from Clark University's Sackler Sciences Center.

Last year, Clark issued a statement as to why they would not rename the building, citing Arthur's lack of proximity to his relatives who directly sold OxyContin. The following week, Jillian Sackler, Arthur's wife, also went on record to defend her husband stating that he died "nearly a decade before OxyContin came to market." These statements grossly negate the reality that Arthur Sackler pioneered the marketing tactics, which relied upon bribery and overprescription, that were used by his family members to promote the drug and ensure the deaths of hundreds of Americans every day.

Being that Clark University's motto is "Challenge convention. Change our world," it is only fitting for its students and administration to take a stand against prevalently unethical corporate practices. Many other universities have ties to Arthur Sackler and on December 5th, Tufts University officially removed the Sackler name from its facilities. Clark had the opportunity to initiate this trend but took no action. Now the pressure is on and the country is watching. Sign this petition to let the Clark administration know that its students and affiliates will not condone its continued inaction.
