Regulate the dioxin contamination. We demand accountability.
The Issue
Enough is enough. Pass a holding bylaw immediately! Show results of a full environmental assessment from the existing incinerator in Clarington, Ontario, Canada.
Toxins in the air are undocumented and unverified in Courtice, coming from what is now called the Durham York Energy Centre. Residential garbage from York Region is also hauled to this location with large dump trucks contributing to the carbon footprint of our land and adding more toxins to the air. Previous reports state that the toxic emissions have surpassed the acceptable limit and there seems to be no accountability, only the desire for Durham Region to build more. Located along the lakefront in Clarington, just 7km east of Oshawa, winds blow these toxins far and wide affecting the health of humans, animals, and the produce we grow and eat.
It’s time for a full environmental assessment to be done BEFORE anything else is built to ensure the safety of residents and protect our health.
Please pass a HOLDING BYLAW right now, to investigate and ensure that proper precautions are put in place and that air quality is within safe limits. This not only affects residents nearby, but contaminants in food that is grown and shipped from our farmland in Clarington, will affect the health of everyone near and far. Dioxins cause cancer. Last we heard the dioxins exceeded safe limits by 12x. We need your support and action to stop the contamination now.
More is being planned as you read this. More than 140,000 tonnes will be brought here. Not everything is recyclable nor can it be burnt. Burning creates toxins.
