Civilian Oversight in the City of Oswego, NY

Civilian Oversight in the City of Oswego, NY
The Issue
I am a long-time resident of the City of Oswego, who, like many others, have witnessed the city and its administrative practices evolve over the years. I am deeply concerned about the economic and social consequences of these changes, including a perceived slow response to community issues.
At the heart of this issue is the city's fiscal responsibility and the rate at which the city spends taxpayer money. Despite ongoing concerns, taxes continue to increase, burdening homeowners and slowing the local economy. In addition, pay increases for city employees and contracted workers continue unabated, with little to no scrutiny on the value provided in return. There's a clear and present need for more fiscal restraint coupled with transparent oversight.
A 2020 report from the U.S. Census Bureau indicated that homeownership in Oswego City was lower than the state average (Johnston, 2021). The high tax rates and rising cost of living contribute to these concerning statistics.
I propose that the City of Oswego establish a civilian-led oversight committee. This committee should review all city expenditures and ensure that taxpayer funds are being used prudently and wisely. In addition, this committee could provide oversight of local law enforcement practices, promoting accountability, and building public trust.
This is not just my personal concern; it is a collective need of the Oswego community to see fiscal responsibility and public accountability prioritized.
Therefore, we appeal to the City of Oswego to consider this petition seriously. Sign our petition to support the creation of a civilian-led oversight committee for financial and police conduct review.
