Coimbatore airport to support more international flights

The Issue

Today airline users from the Coimbatore city have a major challenge with airline connectivity with Middle East, South East Asia, since inspite of repeated requests from the community for improving international connectivity this has not happened. In addition this also affects regions near Coimbatore like Tirupur, Erode and Namakkal which are the major business districts of this region. Not just business people but public have also repeatedly expressed their need for better international connectivity, as they are now forced to use the Cochin airport.

Compare this to the new Kannore International Airport ( KIAL) which has it all! A whooping 11 international carriers and six domestic operators have already confirmed their flight service to KIAL. Whereas Coimbatore International airport has been still fighting for better air connectivity for decades, without any result.

The reasons for this are two fold

1. Coimbatore is not included under BASA (Bilateral air services agreement) which is an agreement that makes it easy for foreign carriers to operate flights. Currently aviation ministry will not bring Coimbatore under BASA

2. Also the facilities at Coimbatore International airport need to be expanded to handle more flights

Because of the powerful lobbying done by the state government of near by states like Kerala, the connectivity in these states is improving dramatically. Be it domestic or international, their government ensures to bring it to their state. Importantly, the state government is willing to provide any type of support system to improve their connectivity and standards.

Coimbatore district has a great potential to generate huge take income through cargo export. Western districts contribute to about 40% of Tamil Nadu's GDP. Coimbatore being the hub among these districts, which do not have much connectivity, be it international or domestic. Indian carriers have long neglected Coimbatore, in this regard.

We dont have enough representation, a powerful lobby to speak for us. This petition intends to change this situation.

We need 100,000 people to support this. Your support matters. You can help bring change. AVIATION MINISTRY BRING COIMBATORE AIRPORT UNDER BASA
