Besides CIMFR, reputed institutions like IIT ISM, BIT SINDRI, PATLIPUTRA MEDICAL COLLGE and HOSPITAL are also located in the city so called COAL CAPITAL OF INDIA.Due to lack of air facilities Dhanbad lacks specialist doctors to come , air ambulance services, lack of good teaching faculty for higher education as they prefer airways, big companies avoid coming for placement and selection for students in IIT and BIT. Also it lacks big companies to come here and setup their factories etc.

Dhanbad is asking for am airport since 3 decades. A new airport area BALIAPUR , DHANBAD has been projected for airport area. Since there is no pressure on the government for airport DHANBAD still lacks an AIRPORT!!
