Petition updateSAVE ZANDVLEI NATURE RESERVE FOR THE PEOPLE OF CAPE TOWNan environmental disaster in the making
Save the Zandvlei
Nov 8, 2021

The City of Cape Town has today closed the mouth of the vlei.

Zandvlei is the estuary of the Sand River.

The vlei is closed to the public because E. Coli pollution caused by apparently unstoppable of sewage inflows, which has caused algae bloom.

This season is the time  of peak fish migration.

The weed harvester, which might help to clear the algae, is defective, and rarely works, and a new machine is on order but delivery is not expected until some time next year.

Closing the river mouth stops the flow which helps to flush the polluted waters of the vlei, and interferes with fish migrations.

The fuse has been lit for an environmental disaster.
