Currently, City Schools of Decatur does not compost or recycle cafeteria waste. A pilot project was started in May at Renfroe Middle School by the SLT and Agnes Scott College. The project's aim was to:

1. compost food, napkins and compostable trays
2. recycle cans, plastic bottles and containers and milk cartons and cardboard.  

A volunteer team of parents and Agnes Scott students educated the middle school students, teachers and cafeteria and custodial staff on recycling and composting practices and how to separate the waste. 

After a 6 week test run, the amount of waste was reduced dramatically! 

The cafeteria normally threw away 40+ bags of trash from lunch waste a day. 

After the recycling and composting project was initiated, the cafeteria only threw away 3 bags of trash per day!!

We would like to roll out recycling and composting at all city schools in Decatur in August 2019.
