SAVE "THE COVE" in Worcester, MA from DEMOLITION

The Issue

SAVE THE COVE- Let the City of Worcester and the developers know that 89 Green St in Worcester MA, formerly Sir Morgan's Cove  and lastly The Lucky Dog Music Hall, has a storied history and firm place in the historical fabric of Worcester that must be cherished and protected for future generations. There must be a way to incorporate 89 Green St into the "Masterplan" of the block between Green, Plymouth & Gold Sts. with the goal of protecting and reveling in that history, and it's possibilities, for all, and not just for the few that will be able to "see Polar Park" from their bedrooms. HOW MUCH MORE DO WE HAVE TO GIVE for this seasonal ball park? At the total cost of $159.5 million for land acquisition, site preparation and construction, Polar Park is the most expensive minor league ballpark ever built, beating out the inflation-adjusted $153-million home of the Las Vegas Aviators. Almost $160 mil and counting is not enough? Historical buildings DEMOLISHED= PRICELESS. Was (Crompton Knowles) and 40 mil of tax breaks for Tabletalk not enough with pad ready swarths of Park Ave are available to this very day? How many tax breaks is this project going to cost us?  Paying THEM to tear down OUR HISTORY = Unacceptable! This project already went from 80 units to 315! According to a public hearing notice, the Gold Block development would be about 380,000 square-feet total, with close to 30,000 square-feet dedicated to food and retail space. There would also be a 152-space parking garage. It never stops- if a developer wants it - especially during historically vulnerable times- Worcester will give it to them at OUR- the PEOPLE's EXPENSE= SAY NO.

Say NO to the development as is. Our history and legacy MUST be valued- it MUST be considered in this equation. Hiding behind the fact that the owners did not list the property as historical on the MACRIS list - does not make it any less historical. The Worcester and Global Legend is well known of the night of September 14, 1981 when the "Cockroaches" came to "town". It was the only club gig in the area they  played at the time. In Boston the gig was banned and in Rhode Island it was canceled because the cat was out of the bag- the Cockroaches were the Rolling Stones! ( https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-news/secret-dates-kick-off-stones-tour-243806/ ) For generations since, local musicians have played that same stage- the one with the pole that every musician in Worcester gets to be behind at least once! Keith Richards being no exception!

The building was built in 1910, way before the forced "WOO" label, and has been an integral part of Green St ever since. Its time for Worcester to have the developers, especially ones from Worcester - who KNOW the history, think "outside the box" as they do in Boston and incorporate or build around historical structures where legendary ghosts roam. We need to preserve that past FOR our future. The Rolling Stones have not been the only famous musicians to play the Cove- Many, many others include Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden touring with GZR, Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath with local musician Clark Brown (Dr.Bewkenheimer, Stoolface) fronting, GODSMACK, STAIND, J. Geils Band, Blue Öyster Cult as the "Cult Brothers", The Fools, Badfinger, Farrenheit, Toy Caldwell, Joe Bonamassa, Sam James, Matt Murphy,  Sleepy LaBeef, John Entwistle Band, Fly Amaro, Jodee Frawley, Physical Graffiti, and more. Before he passed Layne Staley of Alice and Chains was known to hang around Local Legendary Promoter Dan "DANIMAL" Hartwell at the Cove. Where else in Worcester could you go and run into Danny Partridge aka Bonaducci? Extreme with Nuno and Gary were known to visit family bands as well. Years of Band Bashes, events and all types of entertainment have occurred at Sir Morgan's Cove a.k.a. "The Cove".

The quality construction of the building with formidable materials is old school solid - lets think about what CAN happen to incorporate history and progress - without further violating the historical assets of the people of Worcester and the future generations to come. Sorry but the seasonal ballpark, the most expensive in HISTORY, at the taxpayers expense, cannot afford us to lose another historical building without consideration to the people of Worcester and our heritage on its TRUE costs= PRICELESS!

SAVE THE COVE -  By signing this petition - you are encouraging the City of Worcester and the Developers to Say NO to the development as proposed- say NO to the DEMOLITION of 89 Green St., Worcester, MA. and to "reimagine" it's inclusion - without DEMOLITION- in the proposed plans.
