Hattie McDaniel was the first Black Oscar winner, and this amazing woman came from Wichita Kansas. There is no recognition in Wichita for an incredible woman who broke barriers in white Hollywood to pave the way for those to come. We have a statue of Carrie Nation, a tyrant who trashed bars, but nothing for Hattie McDaniel who won her Oscar in 1939 for her role in gone with the wind.
