Remove the sand from Liberty Skatepark

The Issue

On July 23rd 2020 the city of Westminster filled Liberty skate park with thousands of pounds of sand in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Months later, we have seen no progress in reopening the park.

According to Diana Dobbert, the Director of Community Services and Recreation, "Since mid-March all cities in California were/are mandated to follow the Governor's order in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Since that time, all park amenities have been closed and will remain closed until further notice, which includes skate parks and basketball courts.

The basketball courts have not been closed, the hoops being fully functional. We as skateboarders continue to see plenty of people gathering for games of basketball, playing on the playground, and soccer on the open field, yet our park is filled with sand.

Many skate parks around Orange County remain open: Santa Ana, Tustin, Anaheim, Stanton, Brea, Fullerton

The city does not understand that this skate park offers a safe space for skateboarders to practice their hobby and escape from personal problems faced at home or at work while remaining socially distant outdoors.
