City of Turlock Animal Shelter Petition” Dare to Care”
If you, like most of us, drive the streets of this city, partake of any number of social media sites, or just love animals, you are aware of the unprecedented plight of dumped, lost, and neglected pets and for the purpose of this document dogs.
Our local City of Turlock Animal Shelter, run by the most caring and dedicated staff, needs our help.
The shelter, like most others, is at overcapacity and as such is extremely limited to intake of any new strays. While this is a tragedy, the physical building where the staff and pups exist is in sad shape.
What do we need our shelter to be?
• Our shelter should be a safe modern and quiet space for abandoned and neglected dogs to reside without the stressors of street life, the outside elements, and the hope of a “furever home.”
• Our shelter should be NEW and welcoming to both staff, citizens, and visitors, which includes state-of-the-art equipment along with HEALTHY working conditions for both staff and visitors.
What do you see when driving up to and entering the current facility? PARTIAL LIST
• First glance at driving in will give anyone the feeling of entering the parking lot to the county jail. (Which probably is in better shape.)
• Asphalt paved broken humped driveway which if not carefully navigated will probably damage your vehicle. (Not unlike many streets in town).
• Frightened and scared barking dogs in the outdoor part of kennels, which can be seen as you park your car.
• Now up the ramp to the container like modular archaic OLD building a structure missing skirting along with water damaged walls from lack of city maintenance probably and lack of gutters.
What do you see when walking out back to the areas where the dogs reside? PARTIAL LIST
• Walk outdoors to the dog run area where you will find water damaged falling apart doors that barely close!
• Open electrical conduit in areas that staff come in daily contact with while hosing down dog areas.
• An outdoor fenced play area for dogs, where gaping holesexist and allow for escape. This means dogs must be on a tethered leash, not allowing for freedom of movement.
