Help Save the Civano Coffee House

The Issue

The Civano Coffee Shop has been at the center of our neighborhood -- a socially beneficial value to the community at large for 8-years, and a favorite meeting spot.

What’s more is it’s been a beneficial, and political value to City of Tucson officials as well, who have for years touted Civano as a model village – getting a lot of mileage from the fact that it’s the largest, high-performance, mixed use community in the country – with the Civano Coffee House at the apex.

In response to the City of Tucson’s inconsistent implementation, including a recent reinterpretation of PAD 12 zoning requirements specific to the Civano community,  the owners have given up hope that a viable solution can be found and are shuttering their doors – devastating the community and raising concerns that property values for homeowners in the surrounding Civano community will suffer, as will other businesses who feature the proximity of the coffee shop as a great feature/value-add.

The Civano Coffee Shop owners would like to keep the business open and remain in our community, serving as our favorite meeting spot, but they need our help.

To that end, we the Civano community, Civano business owners, and residents of surrounding neighborhoods are calling for City of Tucson officials to:

  1. Provide a variance to the Civano Coffee Shop owners, so they can continue to function exactly as they are, while they work with the city on a long-term, viable solution.
  2. Work with due diligence, and in good faith, to find a long-term, economically viable solution with due haste.
  3. The City Council should instruct departments -- including coding and zoning -- to act in a manner that encourages, rather than discourages, small business.
