Petitioning City of Shreveport, Mayor Glover

Give us our dog park!!

After 5 years of fundraising, the Shreveport Dog Park Alliance has received a generous $280,000 from the Red River Waterway Commission to help fund the first Dog Park in Shreveport, LA! This is just the amount we need to get the park started, and to meet the strict requirements the city has placed on us for the way the park must be built. But just when we thought we had the money in our paws, Mayor Glover says he won’t sign the accord until he receives an explanation from the Waterway Commission as to why it has not yet funded $1 million worth of projects he requested in November for various improvements and additions to city parks along the Red River. Mayor Glover also states that he assumed funding for the dog park would only be through private donations. Never did the Alliance or anyone else state that fundraising would only be through private efforts. In early discussions it was suggested the Alliance to go to the parish for some of the funding. We did and the parish found a way to help! Several entities put in requests for money from the Red River Waterway Commission. The parish asked for their favored project and the city asked for theirs. The decision was left to the RWWC as to what they found beneficial. Details of positive aspects of dog parks and letters of support were presented to the RRWC.

36% of US households are dog owners, 43% in Louisiana! Dog Parks allow dog owners the opportunity to get out of their home into Shreveport's beautiful town and get them up and moving! It is proven that dog owners have a decreased level of stress, lower cholesterol and are less likely to be overweight. We want a town that encourages healthy and happy living, and this dog park would do just that! Dog owner or not, this is a park for all of Sheveport to enjoy! It would beautify and help maintain an area that so many already enjoy. There are many ways this city can improve itself, and it will continue to be a place for all to enjoy. The Dog Park Alliance's efforts are just one more way for many to enjoy a great part of Shreveport.

Please sign this petition to help us receive the money that has already been given to the Shreveport Dog Park Alliance! Show your support for a dog park in Shreveport and change the Mayor's mind!
