File for Chapter 9 Bankruptcy protection
The Issue
The City of Scranton is broke. In recent weeks, the true nature of the City's Indebtedness has come to light: more than $330,000,000 in long term obligations are lurking on the City's balance sheet. The current Administration, under Mayor Christopher Doherty, has struggled to force massive tax hikes of 78% over three years upon the already overburdened residents of Scranton.
However, the sad fact of the matter is that even this drastic action would leave the city with a gaping deficit.
It is time to end the attacks upon City Employees and the "crony politics" that allowed more than $5,000,000 in draws from the Worker's Compensation Trust along with the amassing of $101,115,000 in City Debt and more than $55,000,000 in Authority debt backed by by the City.
A Chapter 9 Bankruptcy filing is a move to protect the people of Scranton from higher taxes, drastically reduced city services and rapidly declining property values. It's time to take steps to actually "Restore the Pride" and not simply pay lip service to a great idea.
