Thank you to the large group of concerned friends and supporters who attended last night’s Scandia City Council meeting!
For those who couldn’t make it, we have some very good and some very promising news to report.
The very good news is that the City Council voted to turn down the DNR grant funds and to take no further action at Log House Landing for the time being.
This means that the City will not proceed with their prior plan to expand and pave the road and landing!
The motion passed at the beginning of the evening, so Steve Kronmiller, Christine Maefsky and Pam Plowman Smith ended up giving an abbreviated version of their presentation, which primarily consisted of a video Q&A with a gravel road expert.
After the video, there was a brief discussion during which the Mayor expressed interest in having our group work with the new Public Works Director (once hired and acclimated) in the upcoming months.
There were two options presented to the Council, both of which maintain the existing road width and an aggregate road surface (the primary difference being the type of aggregate.)
The Carnelian-Marine-St. Croix Watershed Board has already reviewed the two recommended options and voted to support and cost share with the City for either.
We are very encouraged by these events and look forward to our continued participation with the City to promote appropriate solutions that preserve this historic and ecologically sensitive gateway to the St. Croix River.
