The Greer Garson Theatre has been a home to Santa Fe performing arts education for the past 52 years. As former students we spent countless days, nights, and weekends there honing our craft; building production sets, sewing costumes, hanging lights, and learning hands-on what it takes to launch a production.
Those who studied in the Performing Arts Department at College of Santa Fe and Santa Fe University of Art and Design found a family in the Greer Garson Theatre. The faculty and staff took us under their wings, mentored us, supported us, and gave us the opportunity to watch our dreams become reality.
The tools and skills that we gained at College of Santa Fe impact our lives still today, whether we continued to pursue theatre after graduation or not. We acquired creative thinking and problem solving skills, gained an appreciation for collaboration and teamwork, learned the importance of budgeting and time management, and garnered an appreciation for the way that theatre can be used as a tool for social change in order to impact the world around us.
It was because of the forward thinking vision of Academy Award-winning actress Greer Garson, that we were able to have such a wonderful venue where we were able to gain hands-on arts education. The Greer Garson Theatre Center has offered complete facilities for performing arts programs and professional theatrical productions since 1965 and is one of Santa Fe's true performing arts gems.
We, the alumni, along with community members, voice our request that the venue be preserved and available for future use, as we see immense potential for the campus and theatre community.
As the theatre community in Santa Fe doesn’t currently receive enough funding and often struggles to find performance spaces, we see the benefit of turning the Greer Garson Theatre into a rental house / venue management company, which would create resident company contracts for a few local theatre companies, while also renting the venue throughout the year. Each rehearsal space, meeting space, and performance space has the opportunity to provide income through rentals. There is also the opportunity to offer shop services for the resident companies. This is a perfect space for a community performing arts center, an endeavor that they Mayor has spoken about but hasn’t acted on . The housing on campus could provide affordable opportunities for young creative professionals to live and work.
Whatever decision is ultimately made for the old College of Santa Fe land, we urge you to save the Greer so that it can be around for future generations, and serve as a Santa Fe performing arts landmark for years to come.
