Safer cross walks in San Jose
The Issue
On Saturday, February 22, 2020 my aunt and uncle were in an accident. An accident that shouldn't have happened. They turned on the pedestrian crosswalk sign and began to walk, little did they know the driver wasn't able to see them and hit them at full speed. This impact was SO bad that they both flew several yards, my aunt passed away a little after the ambulance got there and my uncle is in very critical condition, barely holding on to his life.
This could of easily been avoided if there were better signage or lighting so drivers can see where pedestrians are walking. The store owners have also commented that drivers tend to ignore the pedestrian crosswalk light and sometimes drivers don't care that there is a person walking. Store owners were not surprised to hear that an accident had occurred. With this information from the store owners I feel like my city has failed to keep my family safe.
The city should be there to help us the people to be in a safer environment. If this was a common problem then there should be a stoplight with a camera to make sure no one crosses on red. They should have put a red STOP sign with flashing red lights to get drivers attention or have a speed bump therefore the drivers have to slow down.
There is so much that the City of San Jose should've done but never did. Now my family has to deal with these horrible outcomes. Please sign this petition in hopes that this tragedy doesn't need to happen again.
If any of you were touched or would like to see how my family and uncle are doing don't hesitate to message me, we really appreciate any support.
