I’m calling for a name change of the Southside Pool in Rockwall to the RUBY DABNEY SWIMMING POOL. When my mom passed away this past February she and I would still laugh and tell stories of the pool on a regular. My mom managed and operated that pool in her community for 20 plus years.. I witnessed my mama being a mother, a counselor, teacher, coach etc the communities youth.. She was everyone’s mama at the pool.. When she retired from working the pool the SOUTHSIDE pool was never the same.. If the kids had money or not to swim she never turned them away even if she had to pay for them..

She welcomed everyone at the pool. When we were racially discriminated against at the Y pool or the white pool my mama never did such.. I had football teammates who would come swim with me without any problems and was treated just like they were from the Southside of Rockwall. She made everyone feel at home at the Southside pool.. We all have great stories and memories from this community pool. This is a way her name and legacy in community involvement will live on.
