Richmond Citizens' Association (RCA)
Nov 10, 2017
***UPDATED NOV 8/17*** Council has requested additional reports & review of the ALR bylaw! On November 7, 2017, Council decided that the bylaw needs additional review and has requested additional reports from staff. These reports will be reviewed in the new year. Therefore, we will not be presenting our petition at this time. However, it is up to all of us to maintain pressure regarding mega-mansions on Richmond farmland. We look forward to having your support when we present our update to City Council on November 14th. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Please join us as we update City Council on the success of our ongoing petition, and feedback we have received from the community. Your presence will send a powerful message to City Council that our ability to farm now, and in the future, is valuable. Due to your ongoing support, Richmond City Council has asked for staff to review and report on the current bylaw which allows mega-mansion development on farmland. Background: Richmond’s farmland is under threat. It is increasingly developed into extravagent estates, complete with mega-mansions. Recently, Richmond City Council approved a 1000m2 (10764 sqft) house size maximum, double the size recommended by the Ministry of Agriculture guideline of 500m2 (5382 sqft). Richmond's “dirt” is black gold, part of only 1% of land in B.C. that is suitable for vegetable farming.
