The Agricultural Land Reserve (ALR) was created 45 years ago to protect farmland from development. Today, Richmond’s ALR is under threat from development in the form of extravagant estates with mega-mansions. Provincial guidelines stipulate a maximum home size of 500m2 (5,382 sqft), however, Richmond City Council has passed a bylaw allowing a house up to 1,000m2 (10,764 sqft).
