Save the oceans and save the world

The Issue

You have stumbled across this petition made by a year 7 student that gags at the knowledge of ocean plastics, and wants to make a change. Ocean plastics have been trouble right from the start, so let’s stop it, before it becomes our end. Here is how we can.

I propose a plan that is in use in many other countries across the world (the closest one being New Zealand), which will highly reduce the amount of plastic ending up in Port Phillip Bay. My idea is to use... socks! No seriously, I don't mean actual socks, I mean fine netting over the drainpipes that lead to the sea, so the liquids go free, but not the solids... including plastics! If you don't think we should, then read on...

I am dumbfounded at how selfish, lazy, and stubborn humans are, and how over 75% of the human race has done nothing to save our amazing oceans. It is a well-known fact that sea turtles and other sea animals can (and will) easily mistake all sorts of plastics for food, (an example would be mistaking a plastic bag for a jellyfish) and try to digest it. Little do they know that within just a few days, their death awaits them. They die of starvation, but the catch is that they have no clue that they are hungry. Sadly, this main reason is why many turtle and other marine specie’s numbers are dramatically decreasing.

Did you know that there are such things as marine garbage patches?! I am not joking… there is one smack bang in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Don’t believe me? Search it up… seriously! Just try to picture an island that is the size of Texas… got that? Now double the size. Then imagine it is completely made of plastics and rubbish. Now picture it in real life. Scary isn’t it? No wonder so many animals wash up on beaches, dead, and full of non-digested plastics. The poor things didn’t stand a chance.

It is hard to imagine that more tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean than there are people living in Victoria… but it is true!! At least 8 million tons of plastic straight from garbage dumps and streets, gets swept away into our beautiful, glistening oceans, only to ruin it all and destroy entire ecosystems. That’s the same as every person in Victoria owning 3 tonnes of rubbish. Three tonnes!!! That needs to change. And that needs to change NOW!

And that is why we need to fight. That is why we need to bring justice to our animals, our oceans, our world, and our home. We need to make a change, and we need to make that change as soon as possible… before it’s too late! Together, we can make the difference, that decides the fate of our beautiful Earth!! Sign my petition, and end this crisis for us all!!!
