Accessible Playgrounds for Pickering

Accessible Playgrounds for Pickering
The Issue
The city of Pickering is in need of an accessible playground. These playgrounds serve typical children and families, but are created in an inclusive way to serve children with a range of disabilities as well. There are children in our community with physical challenges, who are in wheelchairs, use walkers, and have developmental disabilities like Autism Spectrum Disorder, and many others who cannot make full use of the city’s parks as they stand.
For example, playgrounds should include ramps to access higher levels of the play equipment, ramps with double rails, accessible swings, and a fenced enclosure for children who are a flight risk. They should also include a rubberized surface instead of wood chips for children with mobility issues.
We are asking for the City of Pickering to renovate existing parks and ensure new parks are built to be accessible for children of all ability levels.
