SAY NO TO Lockmar Dollar General

SAY NO TO Lockmar Dollar General

The Issue

If, after reading this you feel it is necessary to SAY NO TO DOLLAR GENERAL, please sign this petition.  There is a meeting in the City Hall Chambers on Wednesday, Sept 5 at 7:00pm.  Please try to attend the meeting to show a neighborhood support AGAINST the proposed building of this Dollar General.

Last week a Developer held a required neighborhood meeting at the Senior Center to discuss their proposed plan to build a Dollar General on the south side of the property on Emerson Drive across from Covenant Christian.  Much to their surprise, there were approximately 150 residents that attended.  They were very surprised when they indicated they were only required to send out notices to residents within 500 ft. of the proposed building site.

In 1972, the property is zoned Neighborhood Commercial with a structure size limit of 5,000 sq. ft.  This zoning would prevent large retail space from entering a neighbor community.  The proposed structure is 9,100 sq. ft.  If the zoning for this property is changed to allow this build, it sets a precedent on the remaining property which could lead to yet another large commercial structure causing yet more traffic woes, damaging road surfaces, and increased concerns for the safety of school children to name a few.

The Developer was not able to answer questions raised about a feasibility study or market analysis that should have been completed by their company.  Dollar General and the City of Palm Bay do not have plans to make road improvements to Emerson Drive to support increased traffic and deliveries and do not have plans to add turn lanes to alleviate traffic back ups.  Proposed construction raises questions of safety for children walking to/from schools, safety of an eagles nest on the proposed property, concerns about gopher tortoises on the property, light pollution, and increased traffic.
