We ask Levi Tappan, Mayor of Page, AZ to resign from office amid stereotypical comments.
Why this petition matters
On April 29th, Mayor Levi Tappan sent a letter to Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez asking to open up Antelope Marina and Antelope Canyon (both which fall under Navajo Nation Tribal Parks), stating that National Park Service opened up a neighboring facility; Wahweap Marina.
On April 30th, a Facebook user re-posted the letter with the statement: "Page Mayor asking to work with Navajo Nation to open up their tourist destination: boat ramps, Antelope Canyon, etc.", another user commented "he's busy fighting hard for our people." When Mayor Levi Tappan responded to the user and commented "I wish he battled alcoholism as hard as COVID19"
We respectfully ask that Levi Tappan step down and resign from his position as Mayor of the City of Page. When an individual holds such titles it come with great responsibility to uphold their duties and to be respectful of those who live in their city. His comment is disrespectful and stereotyping an entire ethnic group. 30 percent of residents in Page, Arizona are Navajo. Members of the Navajo Nation contribute millions of dollars in revenue each year to the City of Page.
