There are many good pros and cons to North Vancouver City's council approval of the Darwin redevelopment of the Harry Jerome Lands south of 23rd. Increased density and traffic is a big concern for local residents. A concern which needs to be recognized and addressed. Development is coming and there is no stopping it, but we must appreciate what local residents are sacrificing.
The other side of the coin, is the fact that the revenue generated by the redevelopment will most likely cover the cost of building the New Harry Jerome Community Centre which is to include a 50 meter pool. The other benefit is the increased green space which comes with the development. Yes we are losing Norsemen Field, but the green space on the south side of 23rd is larger plus there will still be green space associated with the New Harry Jerome Community Centre north of 23rd. . Parking has been moved underground, as the actual location of the New Harry Jerome is basically where the existing parking lot is.
So even though this is an important step towards our goal in getting adequate aquatic and recreational facilities for the city, maybe next time you see a local Harry Jerome /Court House resident show your appreciation and thank them.
The next and final step for the pool is council approval of the capital budget for constructing the facility This will be presented to council mid-July. We are so close, but council needs you're support, so let them know your behind the Harry Jerome Centre and 50 metre pool and appreciate their vision for the future
