Keeping Pretty Lakes No Wake Zones

The Issue

Our goal is to protect Pretty Lake and all of the people who enjoy it. We want to make sure that this wonderful resource is intact for future generations to enjoy too. Currently there are pressures from increased development and those who want to reduce 'No Wake Zones' and promote 'dredging projects' for even more boat access. Pretty Lake is a crab sanctuary signed by then Va. Gov George Allen in 1995. The dredging projects can have a negative impact on the crab population not to mention the financial costs that will come with it that will be ongoing. The 'No Wake Zones' are being challenged by many that simply want to get from point "A' to point "B" faster and that point is the Chesapeake Bay for most. In between Point ``A" and Point ``B" are many concerns and even safety that are being overlooked. Those who Kayak , Canoe or simply are fishing can have their day on the water ruined by those racing in a much larger and motorized watercraft. These increased speeds can also wreak havoc on neighboring shorelines along Pretty Lake. Private and public shorelines are put at risk with the constant wake crashing into unprotected shorelines and docks. You combine these factors of removing "No Wake Zones" plus the desire of some to dredge will allow not only more boats but larger ones to make the issue worse. Lake Whitehurst, a freshwater lake has some areas that are larger open areas than Pretty Lake but watercraft are still limited in size and HP not to exceed 9.9HP in this lake. Is the safety and shoreline concerns of freshwater residents more important than those on saltwater? (You will never see a jet ski zipping by on Lake Whitehurst) We believe there should be compromise on all sides of the issue but no compromise on the health of our waterways or safety.  If dredging projects were approved by the city and negative environmental impacts minimized then more no wake zones should be put in place to account for increased boat traffic not less. Pretty Lake is there for neighbors not just those who have boats or live on the water. It's not too much to ask to have the right to safely enjoy Pretty Lake.  Sign the petition to show support for Keeping the No Wake Zones and protecting Pretty Lake.
