Opposition to The Pearl in West End
The Issue
This petition expresses opposition to "The Pearl," a 15-story tall condominium proposed by The Oceana Group over the New Basin Canal between Schubert’s Fuel Dock and Southern Yacht Club on S Roadway Street.
We are strongly against this proposed building for the following reasons: 1) the building's proposed massive height of 166' will overwhelm and is nearly 3-times the district’s current 65' maximum height limit. This will, literally, shadow over nearby businesses at their peak time of business; 2) the project will severely impact already strained parking in the area for existing residences and businesses; 3) the project will bring additional traffic to already taxed roads; 4) the building will be built, in part, over water, negatively impacting aquatic life; 5) the building will further narrow and restrict an already busy, navigable waterway and displace vessels that currently dock on the waterway; 6) the neighborhood sewerage and water services are already over-taxed and fraught with frequent failures. Maintaining adequate water pressure is essential to fire sprinkler systems; 7) the extended construction period will put undue pressure and hardship on the businesses in the area, especially Southern Yacht Club.
We implore the City of New Orleans, New Orleans Planning Council and the New Orleans City Council to oppose this project. As someone who works, lives and enjoys the West End park, the West End waterways and harbor, PLEASE DO NOT ALLOW THIS PROJECT TO PROCEED.
