Let us keep our Chicken(s)!
The Issue
Please allow us to keep our Chickens!
Chickens make fun and interesting pets, little dinosaurs in the yard that produce something of value, and I'm not just referring to eggs. The kids adore them, they come when they are called, love to be held, eat kitchen scraps, produce great fertilizer and keep the insects at bay. We hatched ours from eggs so they can be educational to boot. What's not to love?
We are advocating to allow hens, sorry no roosters, to be kept in enclosed fences or coops in our yards on our own property. Many urban cities allow this including Raleigh, Greenville and our neighboring town of Beaufort. Chickens are far less disruptive than dogs, which I know for a fact live in my neighborhood. **Full disclosure I am a dog lover but we've all stepped in dog poo or had to scoop it out of our yards so you know what I mean.
As we are all striving to be more environmentally responsible let us consider the good common sense that the ability to tend our own gardens and produce our own food (even if just a few eggs a day) makes. I would like to think we could even be good neighbors and share a few fresh eggs here and there with those who aren't able to invest in a backyard chicken endeavor - they really do taste better. Who knows we could make a few community friends along the way.
In short let us keep our chicken(s)!
