Save Ryan Ranch Disc Golf

The Issue

The City of Monterey is requiring removal of Disc Golf from Ryan Ranch. The local disc golf club, the Monterey Stinging Jellies, has worked with the City of Monterey for many years to operate at this location. During that time the City has sanctioned countless events, including the Professional Disc Golf Association's World Championships in 2011. In 2018 the City of Monterey proposed developing the site into a Solar Farm. The community, including many local disc golfers, voiced their concerns about this proposed development. The City Council, including Mayor Roberson, voted to refrain from developing the site, urging the City Manager (Hans Uslar) and his staff to identify alternative locations for a solar farm.

Since this decision, the City of Manager and the Parks and Rec staff have asked the Stinging Jellies to develop a site use agreement to continue disc golf activities at the Ryan Ranch Open Space. Ultimately, local bureaucracy prevailed in late 2018. At that time the City of Monterey forced the removal of all disc golf equipment and the temporary closure of the disc golf course until an agreement was in place.

Nearly two years later, there is not a clear path to a site use agreement and disc golf continues to be an unauthorized activity at the Ryan Ranch Open Space. I am petitioning that the City Manager of Monterey, the Monterey City Council, the Monterey  Department of Public Works, and the Monterey Department of Parks and Recreation immediately consider the following actions:

  1. Develop a temporary site use agreement with the Monterey Stinging Jellies so disc golf activities can continue at Ryan Ranch.
  2. Develop a long-term site use agreement with the Monterey Stinging Jellies so disc golf activities can be a permanent fixture at the Ryan Ranch Open Space.
  3. Rescind the current request to remove any unauthorized disc golf equipment currently installed at Ryan Ranch.

Please consider this petition as representative of my own personal requests, although I'm confident that the signers of the petition own similar beliefs.

Thank you for your consideration and support.
