Summary: The intersection at Flynn Lane & Mullan Road is an increasingly busy and dangerous intersection in one of Missoula's fastest growing neighborhoods. It's not unusual for traffic to be backed up 1/2 mile or more during the busiest times of the day. Please join me in asking the City of Missoula to take action and install a traffic light at the Flynn Lane & Mullan Road intersection.

Personal story: I'm State Representative Adam Hertz. I've started this petition because I've heard from dozens of constituents who are concerned about the traffic flow and safety of the Flynn & Mullan intersection. While I'd like to be part of the solution as your State Representative, the City of Missoula ultimately has oversight and final say in any kind of a traffic control solution at this intersection.

The issue: Every year the City of Missoula puts off addressing this dangerous intersection, traffic and safety concerns continues to grow. On average, over 14,000 vehicles per day drive on Mullan Road through the intersection at Mullan Road and Flynn Lane. Another 3,600 vehicles per day drive through the intersection on Flynn Lane. As the only paved north-south connection between Mullan Road and West Broadway west of Reserve Street, Flynn Lane is becoming an increasingly busy arterial connection. The City of Missoula's eventual plan for the area is to complete Mary Jane Blvd as the main north-south arterial in the area, with traffic control eventually being installed at Mullan Road and Mary Jane Blvd. While this solution might provide fractional relief for the Flynn & Mullan intersection, it fails to take into account the traffic generated by Hellgate Elementary and the inconvenience and danger of pushing that traffic through the Pleasant View neighborhood. It's also a solution that may be years, if not decades, away from coming to fruition. With all the new growth in the Mullan Road area, recent home, condominium and apartment construction has generated hundreds of thousands of dollars in transportation impact fees for the City of Missoula. Those fees are intended to provide the city with the financial means to address the pressures of growth on our transportation system. It's past time for the City of Missoula to take action and install a traffic light at this busy and dangerous intersection.

Take action! The City of Missoula is the only entity that can address the traffic issues at the Flynn Lane & Mullan Road intersection. If the city doesn't take action, this intersection will only continue to get busier and more dangerous.
