Hi everyone,
Quick update:
Last Tuesday, I and some members of the community, assisted the meeting at the North Shore Park Youth Center with West 8, the architecture firm hired by the City of Miami Beach, where they made a presentation of their plan for the park.
Here are some of the details revealed:
- They plan to cut down more than 300 trees, again, these are decades-old and protected native species, to be replaced with 275 'young trees'. No further details were provided.
- Playground rebuild, which was widely rejected at meeting due to its design being incompatible for the park.
- Widen walking and bike trail to 25 ft (wide enough to fit a car). This was also rejected by some neighbors as it is considerably wider than the current trail and will take too much space from its natural surroundings.
- Lastly, it was made clear that West 8 is not aware of the natural habitat, therefore, neither the vegetation or wildlife (including sea turtles nesting) had been considered in their plans for the redesign.
It is crucial for the local community to get involved and demand changes in the design to ensure that the park remains a natural haven with plenty of canopy as it has been until now.
Please send us your comments and concerns to be included in our request for a design revision.
Thank you all!
