The Issue
A portion of North Shore Park, the only oceanfront public park in Miami Beach, is to be dismantled and ceded to real estate developers.
If you are not familiar with it, the park is located on Collins Avenue, stretching from 79th ST, all the way to 87th Street.
It is the only completely free, public park with ocean access in Miami Beach. It features conservation areas for native vegetation, plenty of shade from lush sea grape trees and recreation areas such as picnic tables, barbecue grills, a health trail for biking and running, a dog park and a kids’ playground.
Recently, all picnic tables from the north blocks of the park were removed overnight. After inquiring, a park ranger shared his concerns about a city plan to grant a portion of the park to the developers of a new condo next door called “Eighty Seven Park by Renzo Piano” after an alleged 11 million dollars donation to the city of Miami Beach. This week, the sea grape trees started to get cut down under the false statement that are an invasive species.
While the plan of the developers for this portion of the park is not public yet, it is most likely it will become a private space for their tenants and all trees will be cut down and replaced with lawn landscaping.
On the website for Eighty Seven Park by Renzo Piano there is a mention of a “private garden” as part of their amenities.
The North Shore Miami Beach park is one of the few natural places left in Miami Beach.
The park is full of protected native vegetation, wild birds and conservation areas that belong to tax paying residents. No multi-million dollar donation can justify its destruction.
We urge you to sign and share this petition to protect the park, protect the trees and keep it public for all Miami residents.
Let’s remind the mayor Philip Levine and commissioners Micky Steinberg, Joy Malakoff, Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, Ricky Arriola, John Elizabeth Alemán and Michael Grieco that this lush oceanfront park is full of protected native vegetation, wild birds and conservation areas for all of us to enjoy.
