Pre-1942 Homes will still be heard at the Design Review Board when owners request demolition. Great news! Yesterday at the Commission meeting, Commissioner John Elizabeth Alemán, sponsor of the ordinance, announced her intent to withdraw the ordinance. Sadly, residents in the audience for 8 hours were unable to testify due to the sudden withdrawal. That being said, we are happy that the ordinance is no longer being considered. What next? Our single-family home neighborhoods continue to be the focus of deep-pocketed speculators who seek to purchase beautiful old homes, tear them down, and replace them with McMansions. We must continue to advocate for the preservation of single-family homes. In a time of climate change, we know that the greenest building is the one already in place... and that McMansions are not a solution for our fragile historic barrier island. In the future, we ask the Mayor and Commission to ensure that ALL Land Use proposals are vetted through the proper channels: that they come individually as a referral by a Commission sponsor to be sent to a Committee. Committees should review and build consensus, and only then should the proposal be moved forward. It is hard to quantify the hundreds of hours spent by residents to fight this ill-conceived proposal.... John Elizabeth Alemán's ordinance may be gone, but we must continue to pay attention and ensure that our zoning laws are developed with ALL of the community's input - not just those well connected, powerful players.
