Recently, the Merced community has suffered from the tragic passing of UC Merced student Brian Chuc on Bellevue Road. 

During my time at UC Merced, this is the second time I have heard of a student being killed on this street at night. I believe that this is partially due to the lack of lights and traffic signals on Bellevue Road. 

From my experience, I have noticed that there are barely any street lights on both Bellevue Road and North Lake Road. I believe that Brian’s death could have been prevented had there been more street lights present. I know that drivers tend to speed down Bellevue Ave and North Lake Road, especially at night, because both of these roads are straight roads in the middle of the fields. Due to this, more lights need to be added to both of these streets for the safety of the students. There is high traffic on both of these streets due to the presence of the UC campus, so I would expect there to be more street lights there as a precaution.

I would like to propose the construction of additional streetlights on both of these streets in order to prevent more fatalities. Please consider my proposal for the safety of the UC Merced students and the Merced community.
