Lethbridge Needs a 3rd Bridge
The Issue
Lethbridge is separated by a river which divides two large residential, industrial, shopping centers, and two post-secondary institutions.
A significant portion of the population in the City of Lethbridge live in the southern parts of both the east and west sides of Lethbridge.
At one point in time, there were plans for a southern 3rd bridge that would connect the city, These plans have been tabled time and time again. There is even land that is currently not in use that would work perfectly for making such a route and a bridge.
Connecting our city would provide:
- Housing options for those attending the Lethbridge College
- Lower ambulance, fire, police and other emergency response times
- Lower commute time (both privately and on public transit)
- Relieve strain on bus routes and allow greater ease of transportation and options to and from the West and South sides
- Decongested traffic on Whoop-Up Drive, Bridge Drive, Scenic Drive, and University Drive
- Lowered number of Motor Vehicle Collisions
- Add an extra point of redundancy in the event that both of Lethbridge's Bridges are again closed simultaneously
- An extra escape option for citizens if there were a city-wide evacuation event
The West and East sides of Lethbridge are continuing to grow more, a large expansion to the Lethbridge College and the University of Lethbridge have already been completed.
This has been previously discussed in Lethbridge Council meetings and has been tabled multiple times.
My hope is that this will petition will help change the minds of our Mayor, those on the Lethbridge Council, and bring them to use the plans that had already been laid and get this project into action.
It's time to act. It's time for change. A majority of people on both sides of the city want this.
