Make N. Queen & Chestnut Intersection Safer for Pedestrians

The Issue

The intersection of N. Queen and Chestnut St. in Lancaster City, Pennsylvania is historically dangerous for pedestrians.  Countless individuals have been hit, leaving some with serious injuries.  Per the Vision Zero Plan, this intersection is even listed as one of the top 10 locations for fatal or serious injury.  The High Injury Network is a subset of streets in the city where the majority of fatal and serious injury crashes happen. Using crash data from PennDOT, a subset of streets were identified with the highest number of crashes, and this intersection is one of them.   This intersection sees a lot of foot traffic for many reasons such as the Red Rose Transit Authority Bus Hub, the County of Lancaster Government Offices, and two parking garages are all located within 50 feet. Even in the cover photo you will note our concerns of worn away markings, and a moving vehicle only a mere feet from someone actively crossing.

We petition the City of Lancaster to brightly restripe the crosswalks, most of which are worn away.

We petition the City of Lancaster and PennDOT to, at a minimum, add bright pedestrian signage, and create a traffic light delay.  Creating a delay allows pedestrians to have a few seconds of safer crossing, as all lights are red for automobiles.  For an example of these two requests in action - we reference the intersection of N. Lime St. and E. Chestnut St.

Because one injury or fatality is too many.
