Add Lights to Fields and Courts at Newtown Park

Add Lights to Fields and Courts at Newtown Park
The Issue
Newtown Park is one of the most popular parks in Johns Creek and North Fulton County. With baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis and pickleball courts, three athletic fields, and a world class dog park, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Often you’ll find friends mingling, walking the trails, or enjoying yoga under the pavilion.
When the sun sets however, all of that changes. The park gets dark, and people are forced to head home for the evening. Despite other parks in the area like Wills Park or Webb Bridge Park that offer lighted courts and fields, Newtown Park remains unlit.
In the summer months, the sun sets around 9pm, enabling long hours of fun in the sun. During the winter months of non Daylight Savings time though, the sun sets as early as 5:30pm. This means that for almost half the year, residents aren’t able to enjoy the amenities their tax dollars paid for. This issue is especially felt by residents who work traditional work hours and get home right as the sun goes down.
Adding lights to Newtown Park would enable residents to take advantage of the activities the park has to offer in the evenings. Both kids and adults would be able to have soccer practice, tennis lessons, and sports leagues past the current natural end time. This would enable residents to maintain an active lifestyle burning calories and staying healthy. It would also foster community relationships between families.
This summer, Johns Creek will be updating their Parks and Recreation Strategic Plan. This is a perfect opportunity to let our voices be heard. Please consider signing this petition asking the City of Johns Creek to add lighting to the fields and courts at Newtown Park. Thank you for your support!
