Preserve a Downtown Landmark - Boyd Park - Laura E Corn Mini Golf and Tennis Courts

The Issue

With in the City of Hendersonville, NC there are many areas designated as Historic.  On Thursday, January 9th, 2020 the City Council voted to take away a local landmark Boyd Park of which is home to Laura E. Corn Mini Golf and Tennis Courts at Boyd Park.  In 1998/99 the old Rock Building and shuffleboard courts were taken down to build and relocate the now present Fire Station 1.  2020 the City Council is taking down the rest of Boyd Park to make way for a new City of Hendersonville Fire Station 1.  This petition is in NO way about not supporting our Fire Dept.  Its about Preserving a local landmark Boyd Park.

This is the reason I am asking for our Community and Out of Town Guest to Join in the efforts to make this public park a historic site.  During the summers after playing a round of Mini Golf.  We would have a seat on one of the park bench to enjoy drink and have a snack.  You could hear the locals and out of town guest talk to Mrs. Corn about how this course was great.  How it was still here.  How well maintained by the City.  We played this course with our parents.  Now we are bringing our kids to the park.  Its Sunday we stopped because tomorrow we are taking our kids to camp.

Mrs. Corn started working at the Mini Golf in 1971.  In May 2007 Mrs. Corn was retiring with 35 years of service.  The Mini Golf course was Dedicated in her honor and renamed Laura E. Corn Mini Golf at Boyd Park.  In 2008 my mother and after a few years later my sister joined worked for the City operating the Miniature Golf.  They heard the same stories.  My mother likes to talk about one of the group that would come up from South Carolina.  Stating they were here to eat at one of the restaurants.  Had to stop here for a round of golf before we go back home.  Friends would have tournaments bringing there own trophy.  This week one would get the trophy then have to share it the next.

While the Golf course was open guest would come to the window to ask if they could borrow a Tennis Racket or Tennis Ball.  Over the years there were a small collection that were left on the tennis court.  They would get borrow then returned when finished.

Help save this local treasured landmark.   Boyd Park well over 50 years of memories.  Take a trip around Western North Carolina.  Without having to leave Historic Downtown Hendersonville, NC.

Thank you
